Cover Story: Although dobutamine is commonly used in septic shock to increase cardiac output and tissue perfusion, its beneficial effects on outcome have never been shown. In contrast, it can induce severe side effects and worsen hemodynamics. We have reviewed scientific evidence on its effects in experimental and clinical condition and reached the conclusion that dobutamine frequently produces vasodilation and tachycardia without improving contractility. Thus, it should be carefully used alongside close monitoring. View this paper
