Intelligent Earth System Science: Modeling Interwoven Planetary Dynamics
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
Understanding the Earth system requires moving beyond isolated disciplinary domains to decipher complex, interconnected planetary feedback loops. As we face unprecedented environmental shifts, Intelligent Earth System Science (IESS) has emerged as a critical paradigm—leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) to model non-linear interactions across the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and geosphere with unparalleled accuracy and computational efficiency.
This Topic focuses on the deployment of data-driven frameworks and hybrid AI–physics paradigms to bridge localized observations with global system dynamics. We welcome cutting-edge contributions demonstrating intelligent modeling across key ESS domains, including:
- Atmospheric and Climate Dynamics: Hybrid AI–physics modeling for climate projections, non-linear atmospheric chemistry, deep convection tracking, and climate-responsive risk assessments for compounding hazards like wildfires and air pollution.
- Geospatial Intelligence and Earth Observation: Multi-sensor data fusion (optical, radar, stereo DEMs) for fine-scale land-use change, coastal dynamics, urban sprawl tracking, precision agriculture, vessel trajectory analytics (AIS) for marine monitoring, and high-resolution GPS crustal velocity fields.
- Hydrosphere and Marine Systems: AI-driven water quality monitoring and resource management in heavily impacted coastal waters, river systems, and aquatic environments.
We invite original research, review articles, and novel methodological frameworks that harness intelligence to advance predictive capability, system consistency, and planetary stewardship.
