Broad-Spectrum Antiviral Strategies Against Emerging and Re-Emerging Viral Diseases

The relentless emergence and re-emergence of viral pathogens pose a formidable challenge to global public health security. The rapid spread of novel viruses, coupled with the resurgence of previously controlled agents, underscores the critical need for proactive and adaptable countermeasures. Traditional pathogen-specific approaches often face delays in development and deployment, highlighting the urgency of broad-spectrum antiviral strategies. These strategies aim to target conserved viral elements or host cellular factors essential for the replication of diverse viral families, offering a promising avenue for rapid response against unpredictable outbreaks. This Special Issue of Viruses invites original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and insightful perspectives that explore innovative broad-spectrum antiviral approaches. We welcome contributions detailing the discovery and characterization of novel antiviral compounds, the elucidation of host–virus interactions amenable to broad-spectrum intervention, the development of host-directed therapies, and advancements in understanding viral resistance mechanisms. Submissions focusing on both preclinical and clinical advancements are encouraged, aiming to accelerate the translation of these vital strategies into tangible public health tools.
