Innovative Approaches in Precision Oncology and Translational Advances of Small Animal Cancer Research

Dear Colleagues,

Precision medicine (PM), also termed stratified, individualised, targeted, or personalised medicine, encompasses a rapidly expanding area of research, knowledge, and practice. The promise of PM is the optimisation of the care of patients by population screening and surveillance, the earlier recognition of disease, enhanced molecular diagnosis, and diagnostic accuracy, exploiting new tools such as NGS approaches and artificial intelligence (AI). In veterinary medicine, this field is rapidly growing; however, new scientific efforts and innovative studies are also needed to apply PM in canine cancer. The application of PM includes the identification of specific cancer patients for specific treatments using new drugs as well as immunotherapy.

Researchers and pathologists are therefore called upon to advance this field by identifying new targets and molecular pathways in canine cancer tissues and developing in vitro models to evaluate the efficacy of specific drugs, small molecules, specific antibodies, and cell therapy. Biologists and bioinformatics are invited to use AI models to further our understanding of prognostic factors and molecular targets. Oncologists and surgeons must evaluate the safety, feasibility, standardization and clinical response of innovative clinical protocols including specific drug administration, specific vaccination, and adoptive immunotherapy based on specific targets.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following areas:

• Discovery of new potential PM targets;
• Development of improved diagnostic algorithms with therapeutic implications;
• Proposal of new therapy or therapeutic regimens under the umbrella of PM.
