Dear Colleagues,
Reservoir characterization, modeling and simulation are core parts of geoscience and modern petroleum engineering. They provide the essential tools for understanding subsurface fluid flow in multiscale pore systems, predicting reservoir performance, and optimizing field development strategies. With the increasing complexity of hydrocarbon reservoirs—ranging from deepwater carbonates to unconventional tight formations—the demands for more accurate, efficient, and integrated modeling approaches have never been greater. Recent advances in high‑performance computing, data assimilation, machine learning, and multi‑physics coupling have paved new avenues for reducing uncertainty and improving decision‑making throughout the life cycle of a reservoir.
This Special Issue, entitled “Advances in Coupled Modeling and Simulation: From Hydrocarbons to New Energy,” aims to showcase the latest breakthroughs and practical applications in this rapidly evolving field. We invite original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and case studies that address theoretical developments, numerical methods, and innovative workflows. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Multi‑scale geological modeling and data integration;
- Multi‑scale pore system of flow mechanism characterization;
- Advanced numerical simulation techniques;
- Machine learning and artificial intelligence for proxy modeling, parameter estimation, and pattern recognition;
- Coupled processes (geomechanics–flow–thermal–chemical) and their impact on reservoir behavior;
- Upscaling and downscaling methods for heterogeneous and fractured reservoirs;
- Numerical simulation of new energy development (geothermal, hydrogen storage/production, etc.);
- Simulation of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes, including chemical, miscible, and thermal methods;
- Reservoir simulation for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and geothermal energy applications;
- Uncertainty assessment and risk analysis in reservoir performance prediction;
- Field‑scale validation and real‑time model updating using smart field data.
We believe that this Special Issue will serve as a valuable forum for sharing cutting‑edge ideas and fostering collaborations among researchers, engineers, and geoscientists. We look forward to receiving your contributions and to advancing the science and practice of reservoir modeling and simulation together.
