Membrane Separation Processes for Water Treatment
This special issue belongs to the section "Separation Processes".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
During the last decade, increasing population growth, rapid industrialization, urbanization, and the impacts of climate change have intensified global water scarcity and degradation of water resources. At present, there is a growing need for efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective technologies for the treatment, purification, and reuse of water and wastewater. Membrane separation processes have emerged as important technologies in this context because of their ability to provide high-quality treated water with relatively compact process configurations and opportunities for process integration. Advances in membrane materials, surface modification, membrane module design, and hybrid treatment systems have further expanded the potential applications of membrane technologies, including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, membrane distillation, and emerging membrane-based processes. Nevertheless, membrane fouling, concentration polarization, energy consumption, membrane degradation, selectivity, and the management of concentrated waste streams remain important challenges for large-scale and sustainable implementation.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for researchers, engineers, and practitioners to present recent advances in membrane separation processes for water and wastewater treatment. Particular emphasis will be placed on innovative membrane materials and fabrication strategies, membrane surface modification, process optimization, fouling control, transport mechanisms, membrane characterization, and the integration of membrane processes with conventional and advanced treatment technologies. Contributions addressing the fundamental mechanisms, process modeling and simulation, techno-economic and environmental assessment, scale-up, pilot- and full-scale applications, and resource recovery are also encouraged. The Special Issue seeks to promote interdisciplinary research and provide new insights into the development of efficient, robust, sustainable, and economically viable membrane-based technologies for water treatment and reuse.
The topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Emerging membrane separation and membrane contactor technologies;
- Nanomaterials and advanced membrane materials for water treatment;
- Removal of emerging contaminants, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, salts, nutrients, and microorganisms;
- Hybrid and integrated membrane treatment systems;
- Membrane bioreactors and membrane-based advanced oxidation processes;
- Membrane process modeling, simulation, and optimization;
- 3D printed membranes and their applications;
- Resource recovery and circular-economy approaches;
- Techno-economic analysis and life-cycle assessment of membrane processes;
- Pilot-scale and full-scale applications of membrane technologies.
Thank you for your consideration, and I sincerely hope you will consider contributing to this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
