Multiphase Flow and Reactive Processes of CO2 in Wellbore–Reservoir Systems During Drilling, Completion and Production
This special issue belongs to the section "Petroleum and Low-Carbon Energy Process Engineering".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The increasing use of CO2 in subsurface energy systems is reshaping the operating envelope of modern oil and gas wells. From CO2-contaminated drilling and completion fluids to CO2-EOR and storage projects, CO2 now interacts with wellbore fluids, cements, tubulars, reservoir rocks and formation fluids across the full drilling–completion–production life cycle. These interactions involve tightly coupled multiphase flow and reactive processes that can alter phase behavior, rheology, wettability, relative permeability, mineral stability and mechanical integrity. A robust understanding of these CO2-related processes is essential for safe well control, reliable wellbore integrity, efficient hydrocarbon displacement and secure long-term CO2 containment, particularly under high-pressure, high-temperature and heterogeneous formation conditions.
This Special Issue on “Multiphase Flow and Reactive Processes of CO2 in Wellbore–Reservoir Systems during Drilling, Completion and Production” is seeking high-quality experimental, modeling and field-based studies. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- CO2 influx, migration and control in drilling, completion and workover wellbores.
- Interactions of CO2 with drilling/completion fluids, spacers and wellbore clean-up fluids.
- Effects of CO2 on cement hydration, cement sheath integrity and sealing materials.
- CO2-driven multiphase flow, displacement and phase behavior of reservoir fluids.
- Laboratory methods, numerical simulations and data-driven/AI approaches for CO2-related wellbore–reservoir processes.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
