Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial Intelligence is essentially a computer algorithm based on a neural network (NN) that applies mathematical and statistical models to find patterns in each dataset for various applications. AI algorithms have been highly successful in many industries in accurately predicting the responses of complex processes. The model in AI is continuously being taught to reduce errors in its predictions and adapt itself based on ‘historical trends and new data’. Such a unique feature of AI makes it a very useful tool, and specifically for complex processes where the process mechanisms are still not well understood.

Currently, advanced industrial processes are undergoing a paradigm shift from traditional manufacturing to novel AI- and robotics-based manufacturing. There are several advantages, as well as different scientific challenges, associated with this paradigm shift. For example, currently, AI/ML model development programs are scattered and difficult to use, particularly for scientists with less experience in computer programming (e.g., Python). Different computer programs are needed for the deployment of different AI methods. The available AI programs are also not easily integrated with manufacturing processes, limiting their applications to model development rather than deployment for real-time applications. To apply AI/ML tools widely within manufacturing, the emerging AI platform needs to be reliable, simple, user-friendly, and capable of supporting the achievement of high product quality. These challenges and complexities must be addressed to ensure the efficient and successful implementation of AI technology in industry.

This Special Issue aims to collect high-quality research studies focused on overcoming the challenges and complexities associated with AI, ML, and robotics and identifying the correct ways of utilizing these technologies to improve manufacturing processes and product quality efficiently and effectively. Manuscripts demonstrating the importance of AI, ML, and robotics in further modernizing manufacturing processes are highly encouraged for submission. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Artificial intelligence (AI);
  • Machine learning (ML);
  • Robotics;
  • Applications of AI, ML, and robotics;
  • Process modelling and simulation;
  • Process control;
  • Optimization.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
