Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Demand of eco-friendly green synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles (INP) increases nowadays. The issue is devoted to different INP synthesized by using biomass.

In the past 20 years, a vast majority of water-soluble biopolymers extracted from plants, seaweeds, fungi, and exoskeleton of arthropods was tested for the ability of producing Metal and Metal Oxide INP by reduction of corresponding ions in aqueous solutions of biopolymers. The role of biomacromolecules in green synthesis of Metal and Metal Oxide INP is manifold – they act as reducing and capping agents, serve as templates for INP, and support colloidal stability of the nanosized hybrid inorganic-organic biocomposites. Interest in Metal and Metal Oxide INP is dictated by their possible theranostic, catalytic, and agricultural applications.

Among inorganic INPs obtained by using biomass precursors one can distinguish also carbon quantum dots (CQD) that attracted attention because of their tunable fluorescence emission. Perspectives of CQD applications in biosensing and bioimaging are based on better biocompatibility as compared to that of semiconductor nano-crystals.

The INPs applications are based on their properties that are different from those of single ions and atoms and also from the bulk matter. Of the main importance is the possibility of tuning the INPs properties (catalytic, plasmonic, fluorescent, etc) by changing their size, form, interface, boundary conditions, and aggregation.

Summary:  this Special Issue is dedicated to the bottom-up biomass-related green synthesis, characterization, and application of different inorganic nanoparticles and their composites with organic matter.
