Biobased Polymer Composites for Biomedical Applications
This special issue belongs to the section "Biobased and Biodegradable Polymers".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Organic materials, in particular polymers and bio-based composites, are inherently congenial to human body, and as such they have been conventionally employed in a plethora of biomedical applications.
Due to their biocompatibility and mechanical integrity, hybrid polymer composites have been used in stents, prosthetic joints, vascular grafts, dental and orthopedic implants. In tissue engineering, biodegradable polymer scaffolds can mimic the extracellular matrix to support the regeneration of cartilage, bone, and skin. In pharmaceuticals, polymer vesicles and nanoparticles are used for sustained, localized, or targeted drug delivery systems in order to improve therapeutic efficacy and alleviate toxicity. Stimuli-responsive polymers are designed to react to environmental triggers or systemic variances such as temperature, pH, or redox potentials for smart diagnostics and programmable drug release. Polymeric hydrogel dressings with integrated multifunctional components have been developed to prevent infection and accelerate epidermal repair in order to promote wound healing. Antimicrobial polymers are being explored extensively to address the rapid emergence of resistance bacteria in the post-antibiotic era.
As polymers and biocomposites continue to present a growing interest and breakthrough potential in biomedical applications, there are still rooms for improvement in research and development with particular emphasis on superior performances or innovative approaches. We invite your contributions on this topic to highlight the recent progress of polymers and bio-based composite materials in biomedical applications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
