Polymer-based composites have become indispensable modern structural and functional materials due to their lightweight nature, high strength-to-weight ratio, chemical resistance, and exceptional design flexibility. As these materials are increasingly deployed under challenging loading conditions and severe operational environments, a deep, multiscale understanding of their mechanical behavior is crucial for both theoretical innovation and industrial application. This Special Issue, "Mechanical Properties of Polymer Composites: Progress and Prospects," gathers cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews on the fundamental mechanics, advanced characterization, and innovative engineering applications of synthetic, bio-based, and composite polymers.
Understanding mechanical performance requires bridging the gap between molecular architecture, microstructure, processing techniques, and macro-scale structural response. This Special Issue will focus on several key areas:
- The effect of interface on mechanical properties: Mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced polymer composites, characterization of mechanical properties of nanoparticle-modified polymer composites, mechanical properties of polymer blend composites, and the influence of particle, fiber or interphase interface effects on the mechanical properties of composite materials.
- Deformation, fracture, and fatigue: Fundamental insights into elasticity, plasticity, viscoelasticity, yield phenomena, micro-cracking, crack initiation/propagation, and long-term fatigue under cyclic or impact loading.
- Multiscale modeling and simulation: Molecular dynamics (MD), finite element analysis (FEA), phase field modeling and physics-informed machine learning models that predict mechanical behavior across temporal and spatial scales.
- Advanced characterization techniques: In situ testing, digital image correlation (DIC), nanoindentation, thermography and non-destructive evaluation methods to probe local and global stress–strain distributions.
- Extreme and dynamic environments: Performance evaluation under elevated/cryogenic temperatures, high strain rates, corrosive media, and environmental degradation (e.g., UV, hygrothermal aging).
- High-performance and smart polymers: Mechanical optimization of fiber-reinforced composites, self-healing networks, 3D/4D-printed cellular architectures, and bio-inspired mechanical structures.
By integrating mechanical design with macromolecular chemistry and processing science, this Special Issue serves as a valuable reference for materials scientists, mechanical engineers, and industry specialists. By collecting these works, we aim to accelerate the design of next-generation, high-durability polymer composite systems, fostering safer, lighter, and more sustainable engineering solutions.
