Advances in Functionalized Polymer-Based Coatings for Environment, Energy and Sensing Applications
This special issue belongs to the section "Polymer Membranes and Films".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Functionalized polymer-based coatings represent a rapidly advancing platform for applications in environmental protection, sustainable energy technologies and high‑performance sensing. A key advantage of these coatings is their ability to immobilize active nanomaterials on diverse surfaces, preventing their release and potential environmental impact. At the same time, recent developments in chemical functionalization, surface engineering and nanostructuring have enabled the creation of coatings with tailored wettability, improved barrier performance and selective molecular recognition.
In environmental applications, such polymer-based functional coatings offer enhanced resistance to corrosion, fouling and chemical degradation, contributing to extended material durability and a reduced ecological footprint. In the energy field, they play a crucial role in improving charge transport, thermal regulation and light‑harvesting efficiency, supporting the development of next‑generation batteries, fuel cells and photovoltaic systems. In sensing technologies, the combination of responsive polymers with conductive or optically active components has enabled highly sensitive, real‑time detection of gases, biomolecules and environmental pollutants.
This Special Issue welcomes contributions that advance innovative design strategies, elucidate structure–property relationships and explore emerging applications of functionalized polymer coatings aimed at improving sustainability, energy efficiency and advanced diagnostic capabilities.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
