Bioactive Compounds From Natural Origin

Since the emergence of the first forms of life on Earth, living beings have developed strategies that give them evolutionary advantages, with the biodiversity that exists today being the result of such evolutionary pressure. Historically, humans have used the great chemical diversity of plants and other living beings to prepare health products. The action of any bioactive preparation is due to its chemical composition. In this way, animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and other types of living beings are a vast library of useful bioactive compounds. In fact, many of the modern drugs used today had direct or indirect origins in the study of natural products. Studies in this field are not restricted to the isolation, quantification, and identification of natural products, but also include the evaluation of their biological activities and mechanisms of action. These compounds can be modified via synthesis or biotransformation to generate new bioactive agents. In this context, the current issue is open for scientific research on the isolation and identification of novel natural bioactive compounds; in silico, in vitro, or in vivo studies of the mechanism of action of natural compounds; chemical analyzes of compounds present in bioactive extracts; preparation of new bioactive natural compounds via synthesis or biotransformation; and the preparation of new formulations capable of improving the properties of bioactive compounds.
