Bioactive Compounds and Biological Activity of Plants from the Cerrado and Amazon
This special issue belongs to the section "Natural Products Chemistry".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Cerrado and Amazon biomes are among the most biodiverse regions worldwide and represent a vast yet underexplored source of plant-derived bioactive compounds. Unique environmental conditions strongly influence plant metabolism, resulting in chemically diverse secondary metabolites (specialized) with relevant biological and technological potential. Plants from these biomes have traditionally been used in food systems and folk medicine and, more recently, have attracted increasing scientific interest.
This Special Issue aims to gather high-quality original research and review articles addressing the extraction, characterization, and biological activity of bioactive compounds from Cerrado and Amazon plants. Contributions may include studies on phenolic compounds, carotenoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, fatty acids, polysaccharides, and related metabolites. These compounds have demonstrated a wide range of biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, immunomodulatory, anticancer, and cardioprotective effects, among others.
Beyond health-related applications, bioactive compounds derived from Cerrado and Amazon plants have gained growing attention in multidisciplinary fields, including food science and technology, pharmaceutical and cosmetic development, biomaterials, packaging, environmental applications, and engineering. The incorporation of plant-derived compounds into functional foods, nutraceuticals, cosmetic formulations, active and biodegradable materials, and delivery systems represents an important strategy for innovation, sustainability, and the valorization of biodiversity-based resources.
By bringing together researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds, this Special Issue seeks to provide an integrated and up-to-date overview of advances in the study and application of bioactive compounds from Cerrado and Amazon plants. We hope that this collection will contribute to expanding scientific knowledge, fostering innovation, and supporting the sustainable use and conservation of these unique biomes.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
