Host–Pathogen Interactions and Innate Immunity

Dear Colleagues,

Microbes constantly interact with the host or its surrounding environment, which deeply affects their morphology, metabolism and behavior. For pathogenic microbes, the study of host–pathogen interactions is essential for understanding microbial pathogenesis and the development of therapeutics. Historically, in vivo models have been widely used to explore these interactions using conventional methods. Recent advances in imaging technologies, like multiphoton imaging, and light-sheet microscopy further enabled the characterization of spatiotemporal dynamics of host–pathogen interactions. By integrating these cutting-edge techniques with traditional methods, the distribution and behavior of both pathogens and host innate immune cells, as well as the mechanisms, can be visualized and defined. In this special topic, we invite studies that focus on host–pathogen interactions at multiple levels—organ, tissue and cellular—which have underlying mechanistic studies. Studies leveraging novel imaging technologies to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics of host–pathogen interactions will be highly valued.
