Nondestructive Testing Methods for Metallic Material

Structural safety has always been an important issue in piping, bridge construction and many other industrial fields. The existence of defects adversely affects the performance of metallic materials, posing a threat to the safety of structural health and operators. In order to avoid unnecessary economic losses and guarantee operational safety, it is essential to implement effective and reliable nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E).

Nondestructive testing (NDT) is based on the premise of not impairing the service performance of the objects being inspected. It employs various physical principles and chemical phenomena to effectively inspect and test various engineering materials, components and structural parts, thereby evaluating their continuity, integrity, safety reliability and certain physical properties. This includes detecting whether there are defects in materials or components and determining the shape, size, orientation, distribution and inclusions of these defects. When there are no significant defects or defects that affect the use of the inspected object, NDT also provides information on tissue distribution, stress state and certain mechanical and physical quantities.

When characterizing defects in metallic materials, a large number of nondestructive testing methods are available. Generally, conventional nondestructive testing techniques are categorized into five major types: ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, magnetic particle testing, liquid penetrant testing, and eddy current testing. Among these NDT methods, ultrasonic testing and radiographic testing are widely used and researched  due to their ability to detect internal defects. Techniques such as ultrasonic C-scans, time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD), phased arrays, guided waves, etc., have been widely researched in recent years.

Currently, NDT is evolving from nondestructive inspection (NDI) towards nondestructive evaluation (NDE). Specifically, NDE technology not only aims to detect various macroscopic defects inside or on the surface of the inspected object but also analyzes, predicts and provides a comprehensive evaluation of the inherent properties, functions, states, and development trends (safety and remaining life) of the evaluated object.
