Oxidative-ER Stress in Disease: Metabolic Biomarkers and Therapeutic Opportunities
This special issue belongs to the section "Cell Metabolism".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue aims to provide an integrated view of how oxidative stress disrupts cellular–metabolic networks in systemic diseases and toxic exposures, shapes disease phenotypes, and reveals treatable targets, with a particular emphasis on the bidirectional crosstalk between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and oxidative stress.
The scope encompasses biochemical and cellular foundations of oxidative stress, including redox signaling, metabolic reprogramming, and inter-organelle crosstalk, as well as ER stress responses and their associated inflammation and cell death pathways. The systemic disease focus includes cardiometabolic diseases, neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, chronic inflammatory/autoimmune conditions and aging, along with kidney, lung, and gastrointestinal diseases. Toxicological aspects cover redox-active effects of environmental exposures and xenobiotic metabolism, alongside detoxification pathways.
On the topic of diagnostics and therapeutics, we invite studies on circulating and tissue-specific biomarkers, targeted antioxidants and redox modulators, lifestyle interventions, and methodological approaches involving advanced omics, systems biology, and computational modeling. Translational studies, clinical evidence, and risk assessment frameworks are also encouraged. Article types may include original research, comprehensive reviews, perspectives, and methodological papers.
In summary, we seek high-impact contributions that elucidate the roles of oxidative and ER stress across systemic and toxicological diseases, bridging basic science and clinical translation, with priority given to interdisciplinary and multi-omics studies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
