Dear Colleagues,
In the context of the global census, diabetes mellitus and its consequences, including nephropathy, affect approximately 40% of diabetic patients, which is more common in the scientific domain. Diabetic nephropathy has also been recognized as diabetic kidney disease, the term used to describe impairment of kidney function in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The major concern of kidney failure and the primary cause of diabetic death is diabetic renal disease. However, there is still no clarified explanation for how hyperglycemia and kidney injury are critically related, in recent studies. In this proposed Special Issue, the heterogeneity of diabetic nephropathy's etiology and its underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms would be deciphered. To this goal, the role of oxidative stress, inflammation, autophagy, mitochondrial dysfunction, and importantly genetic and epigenetic nephropathy risk factors would also be considered. The reversal and prevention of diabetic nephropathy have potential relevance to the oxidative-stress pathway for this particular interest, early biomarkers would also be put on particular attention as they hold considerable promise for improving knowledge and early detection of nephrotic illness.
For this Special Issue, we welcome articles, including both original research and reviews, that can enhance the better understanding and knowledge of the molecular origins of disease. The proposed submissions are focusing on, but are not restricted to:
- The comprehensive understanding of single-cell transcriptomics through single-cell RNA-seq and single-nucleus RNA-seq in studying the pathogenesis and treatment of diabetic kidney disease.
- Natural compounds/nutraceuticals and plant extracts used for both prevention and treatment of diabetic kidney disease that target certain molecular mechanistic processes.
- The relationship between diabetes-mediated kidney damage and oxidative stress, reactive oxygen species, inflammation, autophagy, and mitochondrial dysfunction.
- The application of genetic, cellular, and histopathological studies to nephropathy prediction.
- The use of nanomedicines and nanoparticles (NPs) as efficient therapeutic, diagnostic, and imaging tools for managing and treating diabetic kidney disease.
