Advances in Perioperative Anesthesia and Pain Management
This special issue belongs to the section "Anesthesiology".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Perioperative anesthetic care is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by increasingly complex surgical populations, advances in monitoring and airway technologies, evolving pharmacological strategies, and a growing emphasis on individualized, physiology-guided care. Patients presenting for surgery are older and more frequently affected by obesity, cardiovascular and respiratory disease, frailty, and other comorbidities that increase perioperative risk. At the same time, anesthesiologists are increasingly involved in the management of trauma patients and critically ill individuals in whom airway management, induction of anesthesia, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic instability, coagulation abnormalities, and pain management may have a direct impact on clinical outcomes.
Contemporary perioperative practice therefore extends well beyond the delivery of anesthesia. It encompasses risk assessment and optimization, safe airway management, maintenance of physiological stability, patient blood management, multimodal analgesia, enhanced recovery, and prevention of postoperative complications. Emerging technologies, including advanced monitoring, point of care ultrasound, video laryngoscopy, decision support systems, and artificial intelligence, also offer new opportunities to improve safety and personalize perioperative care. Translating these advances into clinically meaningful improvements, however, requires robust evidence and multidisciplinary collaboration.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate recent advances in perioperative anesthesia and pain management, with particular emphasis on strategies that improve patient safety, physiological stability, and postoperative outcomes. We welcome original research, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, narrative reviews, clinical studies, and other high-quality contributions addressing both established and emerging approaches to perioperative care.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Perioperative risk assessment and optimization;
- Airway management, difficult airway, and awake intubation;
- Physiologically difficult airway and peri-intubation optimization;
- Anesthesia for trauma and critically ill patients;
- Hemodynamic monitoring and management;
- Perioperative respiratory management and oxygenation;
- Pharmacology of anesthesia and neuromuscular blockade;
- Regional anesthesia and multimodal analgesia;
- Acute and postoperative pain management;
- Patient blood management, coagulation, and transfusion;
- Perioperative care of patients with obesity and other high-risk conditions;
- Enhanced recovery and prevention of postoperative complications;
- Perioperative outcomes and quality improvement;
- Artificial intelligence, advanced monitoring, and emerging technologies in anesthesia.
We hope that this Special Issue will provide a multidisciplinary platform for clinically relevant research that advances evidence-based, patient-centered perioperative care.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
