Periodontal Diseases: Latest Advances in Diagnosis and Therapeutic Strategies

Periodontal diseases represent a major global health burden and are increasingly recognized as complex multifactorial conditions resulting from the interaction between microbial dysbiosis, host immune response, genetic susceptibility, hormonal status, nutritional status, and systemic metabolic factors. Recent advances in diagnostic technologies have highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach that integrates traditional clinical parameters with molecular and biological data, advanced imaging, and bone densitometric assessment.

In particular, the combined evaluation of genetic predisposition, subgingival microbiological profiles, and host-response inflammatory biomarkers may provide a more comprehensive understanding of disease onset, progression, and patient-specific risk. Such an integrated diagnostic framework allows clinicians to move toward a more personalized and predictive model of periodontal care.

Furthermore, emerging evidence supports the role of targeted adjunctive strategies—including nutritional interventions and metabolic modulation where appropriate—in modulating the host response and improving therapeutic outcomes.

This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest advances in diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies in periodontology, with a particular focus on precision medicine, personalized treatment approaches, and multidisciplinary management of periodontal diseases.
