HIV and Aging
This special issue belongs to the section "Clinical Care".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The remarkable success of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has transformed HIV infection from a rapidly fatal disease into a manageable chronic condition. As a result, people with HIV (PWH) are now living longer, leading to an increasing prevalence of age-related comorbidities and an accelerated aging phenotype. This demographic shift presents unique challenges in understanding the complex interplay between HIV, ART, and the aging process.
In this Special Issue, we aim to explore the latest advancements in research concerning HIV and aging. We will focus on, but are not limited to, the following areas:
- Social and psychological aspects of aging with HIV: quality of life, mental health, stigma and healthcare access for older PLWH.
- Optimizing follow-up strategies: Tailoring clinical guidelines and monitoring protocols to address the unique health needs and increased complexity of older PLWH, including screening for age-associated comorbidities and geriatric syndromes.
- Innovations in care delivery models: Exploring new approaches to HIV care, such as integrated care models that incorporate geriatrics, mental health, and social support services, to better manage the multi-faceted challenges faced by aging PLWH.
- Role of multidisciplinary teams: Emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts involving HIV specialists, geriatricians, cardiologists, neurologists, mental health professionals, and social workers in providing comprehensive and holistic care for older individuals living with HIV.
