Dear Colleagues,
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a mature and versatile biotechnology that plays a central role in the sustainable production of bioenergy while supporting circular economy principles. Through the microbial conversion of organic matter in oxygen-free conditions, AD enables the generation of biogas—primarily composed of methane and carbon dioxide—from a wide range of substrates, including agricultural residues, animal manure, food waste, wastewater sludge, and industrial by-products. This Special Issue focuses on recent advances in anaerobic digestion processes aimed at improving energy efficiency, process stability, and overall system sustainability.
Key themes include feedstock characterization and co-digestion strategies, process optimization and modeling, microbial community dynamics, and the integration of AD with complementary technologies such as biogas upgrading, nutrient recovery, and power-to-gas systems. Attention is also given to operational challenges such as inhibition, digestate management, and scalability, as well as life-cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis to evaluate environmental and economic performance. By showcasing innovative research and practical applications, this Special Issue highlights the potential of anaerobic digestion to contribute to renewable energy portfolios, waste management solutions, and climate change mitigation.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Fermentation is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
