Applications of Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality in Creative Technology

Dear Colleagues,

As we look to resolve the issues that extended reality (XR) hardware, which encompasses virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), has posed, the attention of researchers turns to how the technology can be used. The capabilities of XR are being applied across disciplines, moving beyond the initial concepts that were conceived for its application.

This Special Issue of Electronics will explore the latest advancements in and future directions of XR development and their impact on creative technology and video games. We invite researchers and practitioners to share their findings, analyses, and case studies that demonstrate how XR is being applied and explored in areas related to video games and creative technology, bringing new opportunities and challenges.

Potential article topics:

• XR in performance:
  • Covering the application of XR in fields such as dance, theatre and musical performance, as well as the new forms of artistic expression that XR enables.
• XR in games:
  • Covering the technical and conceptual impacts of XR requirements in gaming and gaming type structures, including the following:
    • Applications in different genres;
    • The nature of immersion, as well as the differing use of feedback and control systems such as haptics;
    • The use of artificial intelligence;
    • The use of collaborative interaction.
• XR in Art and Culture:
  • The application of extended reality to visual art, museums, immersive experiences in cultural and heritage sites, and the exploration of extended reality in installations.
• XR in the metaverse and virtual environments:
  • The application of extended reality for immersive concepts, particularly its use in the metaverse.
• XR in theme parks:
  • Research that explores the application of XR in theme park rides and experiences.

We request the submission of research articles, review papers, and case studies showcasing varied XR applications in creative technology contexts. Interdisciplinary approaches and international collaborations that highlight the potential and challenges of extended reality across various fields are especially welcome.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
