Emerging Challenges in Pediatric and Neonatal Acute Care: Clinical Innovation and Soft Skills Support
This special issue belongs to the section "Pediatric Nursing".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Pediatric and Neonatal Medicine is a rapidly evolving field, shaped by changing epidemiology, increasing patient complexity, and continuous technological innovation. Emergency departments and neonatal units are facing growing clinical demands, with critically ill infants and children presenting a broad spectrum of acute conditions—including neurological and infectious diseases, as well as cases requiring ventilatory support—that require prompt recognition, accurate diagnosis, and timely intervention. Innovations such as point-of-care ultrasound, advanced monitoring systems, simulation-based training, and artificial intelligence are progressively transforming clinical decision-making and redefining standards of care. Equally important, soft skills—including effective communication, teamwork, leadership, and attention human factors—are essential to ensure safe, patient-centered, and high-quality acute care.
Concurrently, organizational challenges—including emergency department crowding, variability in triage systems, and limitations in human and material resources—underscore the urgent need for integrated models of acute care that combine clinical innovation with strong soft skills, particularly in the management of complex neurological, infectious, and respiratory conditions.
This Special Issue aims to bring together current evidence and emerging perspectives to support clinicians, researchers, and healthcare leaders in addressing these challenges and enhancing the quality, safety, and efficiency of pediatric and neonatal acute care. We welcome submissions of original research articles, narrative and systematic reviews, letters or commentaries, multicenter studies, methodological contributions, and clinically relevant case reports that explore technological advances and/or the role of soft skills in acute pediatric and neonatal care.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Children is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
