Bioactive Compounds in the Management of Neurodegenerative Diseases
This special issue belongs to the section "Cellular Neuroscience".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the progressive loss of neuronal structure and function, which entail cognitive, motor and behavioral dysfunctions. Despite substantial advances in understanding their pathophysiology, the current treatments mostly attenuates symptoms without halting the disease.
Bioactive compounds, substances derived from natural sources like plants, animals and microorganisms, have emerged as promising agents in managing neurodegenerative diseases due to their broad spectrum of neuroprotective effects and safety profile. Their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neurotrophic, anti-aggregation and anti-apoptotic properties, in addition to their ability to modulate several cellular signaling pathways involved in neurodegeneration, are widely recognized. Recently, importance has also been placed on the role of bioactive compounds in promoting neurogenesis and astrocytes reprogramming into neurons.
However, the clinical application of bioactive compounds in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders faces several challenges, mainly due to issues with the blood-brain barrier permeability, bioavailability, stability and dosage standardization.
This Special Issue invites original research articles, reviews and systematic reviews with the aim to enrich the knowledge of the role played by natural compounds in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Topics of interest include the modulation of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, regulation of apoptosis and protein degradation systems, mechanism of action, neurogenesis, cell reprogramming, strategies improving clinical applicability of bioactive compounds and synergistic effects with conventional therapies. Manuscripts providing translational value are particularly welcomed.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
