Bio-Inspired Intelligent Sensing, Fault Diagnosis and Health Management for Complex Engineering Systems

Dear Colleagues,
Bio-inspired intelligence is increasingly reshaping rotor dynamics, vibration analysis, fault diagnosis, and health management for complex mechanical and energy systems. Inspired by biological mechanisms such as perception, adaptation, evolution, self-organization, and cooperative behavior, this Special Issue aims to collect recent advances in biomimetic modeling, intelligent sensing, nonlinear dynamics, prognostics, and resilient decision-making for rotating machinery, blade–disc and bladed-rotor systems, gear–rotor systems, turbomachinery, aerospace equipment, transportation equipment, and industrial power systems.
We welcome high-quality original research and review articles addressing both theoretical methods and engineering applications. Topics of interest include bio-inspired sensing and signal processing; rotor dynamic modeling and vibration response analysis; floating-frame-of-reference formulation, substructure modal synthesis, component mode synthesis, reduced-order modeling, and fluid–structure-coupled modeling; neural, evolutionary, swarm, immune-inspired, and generative learning models; transfer and domain adaptation; few-shot and incremental learning; graph-based and interpretable diagnosis; multi-sensor fusion; uncertainty-aware prognostics; and biomimetic fault-tolerant control or maintenance strategies.
This Special Issue particularly encourages submissions on blade–disc and bladed-rotor vibration, self-rotating and whirling effects, rotor–stator rubbing, blade–casing interaction, dovetail and tenon-connected structures, gear–rotor dynamics considering eccentricity, modification, clearance, and nonlinear contact, guide-vane shaft coupling systems, and other complex rotor-bearing-seal or electromechanical coupling systems. Studies that combine rotor dynamics mechanisms with data-driven intelligence, address data scarcity and cross-condition generalization, and demonstrate experimental, numerical, or industrial validation are especially encouraged.
By bringing together researchers from biomimetics, rotor dynamics, vibration and control, artificial intelligence, mechanical engineering, reliability engineering, aerospace, transportation, and energy equipment, this Special Issue aims to provide a focused forum for innovative methods and applications that support safe, sustainable, resilient, and intelligent rotating machinery and complex engineering equipment.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Bio-inspired modeling, sensing, and signal processing for rotating machinery and complex mechanical systems;
- Rotor dynamics, nonlinear vibration, stability, whirl, rubbing, and rotor–stator interaction;
- Dynamic modeling and vibration analysis of blade–disc, bladed-rotor, gear–rotor, rotor-bearing-seal, and guide-vane shaft systems;
- Floating-frame-of-reference formulation, component mode synthesis, substructure modal synthesis, reduced-order modeling, and fluid–structure coupling;
- Intelligent fault diagnosis, prognostics, health management, and remaining useful life prediction for rotating machinery;
- Neural, evolutionary, swarm, immune-inspired, graph-based, generative, transfer, and domain-adaptive learning models;
- Digital twins, biomimetic maintenance decision-making, fault-tolerant control, and engineering validation for aerospace, energy, transportation, and industrial equipment.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
