Cover Story: The composition of the mineral layer formed on vertical steel structures exposed in a seaport under cathodic protection varied along the tidal zone. In the lowest part of the tidal zone, the layer was mainly composed of aragonite, with magnetite and FeS as minor components. In the mid-tide zone, the mineral layer was enriched in brucite, a typical feature that can be associated with the persistence of humidity on the steel surface even after exposure to air. In the highest part of the tidal zone, cathodic protection efficiency was only partial and decreased with altitude. The mineral layer included corrosion products typical of aerated marine environments such as akaganeite and goethite. View this paper
