Cover Story: "Factor Analysis of Ordinal Items: Old Questions, Modern Solutions?" by João Marôco addresses the challenges of applying factor analysis to ordinal variables, such as those derived from Likert scales. Traditional estimation methods, such as maximum likelihood (ML), are critiqued for their inadequacy with ordinal data. In this paper, the author compares ML with more modern approaches, particularly using polychoric correlations with weighted least squares (WLS). Through simulations and case studies, the research highlights that while WLS generally performs better, it can lead to artefactual estimates in skewed data, emphasizing the complexity of analyzing ordinal variables.
