Cover Story: The ratio between the linear (α) and quadratic (β) terms of cell survival after photon exposure is generally considered to be a sufficient indicator of the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of the accelerated ions used in particle cancer radiotherapy (the lower photon α/β is, the higher the RBE will be). In this study, we argue that for clinically relevant carbon ions, the latter statement may not always be completely true. Furthermore, we show that the absolute values of α and β also play a very important role in determining the RBE. Finally, we introduce a simple methodology to possibly mitigate the anti-correlation between α and β during the fit of the photon survival curve. View this paper
