Cover Story: Accurate aerodynamic models are vital for missile control. This paper, using wind tunnel data, analyzes how modeling errors influence missile dynamics and control. We compare methods and test longitudinal coefficient deviations. The key findings are as follows: interpolation risks overfitting; denser Mach testing or segmentation improves accuracy; and derivative/coefficient error models enable faster uncertainty studies within limited envelopes. Crucially, only C, CmCL, and Cmq affect longitudinal eigenvalues. The lift/pitch control frequency difference dictates non-minimum phase behavior. Critically, aerodynamic uncertainties amplify overshoot risk, necessitating robust control design to counter modeling imperfections. View this paper
