Cover Story: The Athena parallel robot is a novel solution developed for minimally invasive robotic-assisted pancreatic surgery, designed to support surgeons during complex procedures such as the Whipple procedure. This study presents its full development process, from kinematic scheme to experimental model testing, including command-and-control architecture, calibration stage, and structural validation through finite element analysis. Experimental tests on the mechanical structure enabled the identification and correction of sources of mechanical backlash, which was reduced by up to 4.1 times through component improvements. Additionally, workspace mapping using an optical system revealed the need to extend coverage to the entire pancreatic region—head, body, and tail—without patient repositioning. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution for this type of surgery. View this paper
