Cover Story: This cover illustrates the role of skeletal muscle-derived MG53 as a regenerative myokine for the human heart. Although MG53 is highly enriched in skeletal muscle, its expression in adult human cardiomyocytes is minimal. The human heart may therefore rely on circulating MG53, released from skeletal muscle as an endocrine “repair reservoir” to help preserve myocardial integrity following injury. MG53 promotes cardioprotection by stabilizing damaged membranes, preserving mitochondrial function, and modulating inflammatory responses. View this paper
