Cover Story: Pneumococcal disease in the elderly is an important Public Health question because of the potential burden of disease. In the Veneto Region, vaccination against pneumococcus is available on a voluntary basis. Through this study, we evaluated invasive pneumococcal disease in the elderly population of the Veneto Region and observed the epidemiological trends of circulating serotypes. The experience in our territory induces us to continue close surveillance along with typing of circulating serotypes in order to understand the evolutionary trajectories of the disease and refine preventive vaccine strategies.
