Cover Story: Stereotypical portrayals of mental illness have a long history in film (e.g., the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), but relatively few studies have investigated how viewing films depicting mental illness influences prejudice toward people with mental illness. In the current studies, we investigated the effects of watching the film Joker on prejudice. Joker was released in 2019 and became the first R-rated film to break USD 1 billion at the box office. The film does what many films before it have done: it associates mental illness with acts of violence. Across two studies, we demonstrate that viewing Joker increases prejudice toward people with mental illness. Moreover, in Study 2, we demonstrate that these increases in prejudice are difficult to mitigate. View this paper
