Cover Story: Ice, the most abundant mineral in the polar snowpack, is a potential adsorbent for photochemically oxidized Hg (Hg2+) in the atmosphere. As a complement to field and laboratory experiments, the adsorption affinity of Hg2+ for ice surfaces was estimated using ab initio calculations. Results highlighted mild Hg2+ adsorption on ice, which could be the atomic-level cause of the summertime air–snow Hg cycling in the polar regions. View this paper
