Cover Story: Microfluidics provides precision control of fluids, enabling automation of liquid handling systems to meet a wide variety of applications. Anisotropic ratchet conveyors are a type of microfluidic system that manipulates liquid droplets by converting an orthogonal vibration to directed motion with micropatterned surface features. Recent advances in this system provide the ability to selectively control timing and directionality of droplets, presenting a simple, inexpensive method for automated droplet handling.
