Cover Story: The convergence of sharing economy, mobile computing and digital platforms is helping to accelerate the deployment of on-demand shared mobility. The appeal of this form of transport is largely attributed to its convenience, ease of use, and affordability compared to private cars. Combined with the future addition of autonomous vehicles, this business model has the potential to completely transform the mobility landscape and disrupt existing norms such as the taxi industry and potentially the suburban bus line. Through an environmental scan, we present a broad insight into the technological, social, and economic impacts of this mobility solution. The paper will be valuable to stakeholders interested in responding to the needs and impacts of on-demand mobility services, and inform their policy on the implementation of smart mobility solutions within their cities and jurisdictions.
