Cover Story: Gold nanohole arrays (GNA) are hybrid metal/dielectric metasurfaces exhibiting versatile support for both localized and propagating surface plasmons. Given their capabilities, precise optical tuning is necessary for biosensing applications. We successfully employed a customized particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) implemented in Ansys Lumerical FDTD to provide tuned GNA structures with a specific optical response. The PSO convergence was confirmed for the set of optimized parameters and the selected fitness function. The reliability of our optimization routine was successfully tested by comparing its outcomes with computational solutions based on scattering-matrix formalism and analytical methods, suggesting the reliability of our approach.
