An increased number of studies are arising regarding ischemia–reperfusion injury and its mechanisms. However, little is known about the obscure phase of ischemia alone, by which the organ will be conditioned to face reperfusion in a more or less optimal situation. The data of this study reveals that during cold ischemia, ALDH2 is related to hepatoprotection, by maintaining ATP levels (one of the main issues during ischemia), by cleansing toxic compounds such as 4-HNE, and by being associated with increases of antioxidant factors such as Nrf2.
