Emerging Contaminants in Soil–Plant Systems: Source, Transformation, Effects, and Mitigation Strategy
This special issue belongs to the section "Emerging Contaminants".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue addresses the environmental processes and risks of emerging contaminants (ECs) within the broad context of soil–plant systems, which encompass not only plant-related processes but also key interactions with soil microbiota and soil fauna (e.g., earthworms). We welcome contributions that investigate EC dynamics across these interconnected compartments, with a focus on their sources, environmental transformation, ecological effects, and potential mitigation strategies. The objective is to compile research that elucidates the complete pathway of ECs—from release and transport to biological uptake and trophic transfer—and to assess their bioavailability, toxicity, and risks to ecosystem functioning and human health.
This initiative addresses persistent gaps in the rapidly expanding literature on ECs. While their occurrence is widely reported, an integrated understanding of their behavior, long-term ecological impacts, and interactions within the multi-compartment soil–plant system remains limited. This Special Issue aims to bridge disciplines and methodologies—from mechanistic laboratory studies and field monitoring to predictive modeling and remediation assessments. By consolidating multidisciplinary contributions, it will promote robust frameworks for risk assessment and support the development of science-based mitigation and management strategies for terrestrial environments.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Toxics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
