Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in understanding the occurrence, exposure pathways and health implications of contaminants that are newly detected, insufficiently regulated or evolving in their use and environmental behaviour. Emerging contaminants, including micro- and nanoplastics, PFAS, pharmaceuticals, personal‑care products, transformation by-products and endocrine‑active compounds, present growing concerns due to their persistence, widespread distribution and largely unknown cumulative effects on human health.

This Issue welcomes contributions that advance the use of new approach methodologies (NAMs), including in silico toxicology, high-sensitivity analytical detection methods, refined exposure and toxicokinetic modelling and innovative biomonitoring strategies. The collection welcomes interdisciplinary studies that apply a "One Health" approach and integrate the exposome paradigm to bridge gaps between external exposures, internal biomarkers and long-term disease risk. We particularly encourage research that examine the interconnectedness of environmental and human health to clarify the cumulative impacts of low-dose chemical mixtures on vulnerable populations throughout the lifespan.

By assembling cutting‑edge contributions, this Special Issue aims to support more holistic and informed approaches to hazard identification, exposure science, risk assessment and regulatory decision making in the face of the increasingly complex environmental challenges of the modern era.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Toxics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
