Advanced Edge Computing for Intelligent Audio Analysis
This special issue belongs to the section “Information and Communication Technologies“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Sound is a fundamental phenomenon in nature and a primary means of perceiving, communicating, and understanding the world. It is also an essential tool for diagnosing safety and operational conditions. Human activity is inherently connected to sound, resulting in a wide variety of audio processing applications.
At the same time, edge computing provides high-quality acquisition, real-time analysis, enhanced privacy, and optimized bandwidth requirements. Audio acquisition and analysis within such an environment, increasingly known as the Internet of Audio Things, provide innovation across industrial IoT, smart cities, healthcare, and environmental monitoring.
In addition, artificial intelligence within the resource-constrained edge computing world inspires innovation in audio signal processing, system architecture, algorithmic optimization, and considerations of privacy and security.
The topics of the Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Applications for industrial environment with acoustic anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, and quality control.
- Applications for healthcare environment, targeting breathing monitoring, cough detection, and acoustic epidemiology.
- Applications for smart cities targeting traffic analytics and noise pollution relief.
- Wildlife monitoring.
- Sensor fusion at the edge.
- Energy-harvesting and batteryless audio systems.
- Hardware-aware AI architectures for ultra-low power audio processing.
- Neuromorphic και event-based audio processing at edge
- Efficient model design and self-supervised learning on the edge.
- Federated, continual and lifelong learning for audio intelligence at edge.
- Privacy in centralized and decentralized learning architectures.
- Zero-shot domain adaptations.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Technologies is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
