Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Against the backdrop of global climate goals and the energy structure transition, the upgrading of clean coal technologies and efficient disposal of coal-derived wastes have emerged as pivotal topics in the international energy and environmental science community. This Special Issue will focus on the interdisciplinary frontier of clean coal technology innovation and waste synergistic management, encompassing key research directions, such as the efficient removal of coal-fired pollutants, high-value utilization of coal-based solid wastes, optimization of low-carbon coal chemical processes, and environmental risk assessments of waste disposal. It aims to compile cutting-edge international research achievements and deeply explore the synergistic pathways between core technologies and the treatment of coal gangue, fly ash, and desulfurization residues. Moreover, it will analyze the dilemmas of economic feasibility and ecological compatibility in technology applications across diverse regional contexts. By establishing a high-level academic exchange platform, this Special Issue will provide theoretical support and a practical reference for promoting the green transition of the global clean coal industry, achieving waste reduction and resource recovery, as well as ultimately facilitating the sustainable development of the global energy–environment system.

This Special Issue focuses on clean coal technology and waste management, exploring technological innovations and waste disposal solutions within the coal industry that advance environmental protection and sustainable development. It closely aligns with the journal Sustainability’s commitment to promoting the green transformation and environmental conservation in the energy sector.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Innovation in core mechanisms of clean coal technologies;
  2. Review of application prospects for frontier technologies in this field;
  3. New technologies and conversion mechanisms for the high-value utilization of coal-based solid wastes;
  4. Development and efficacy evaluation of synergistic pollutant removal technologies for coal combustion;
  5. Research on low-carbon coal chemical process integration and waste reduction pathways;
  6. Environmental risk tracing, simulation, and control strategies for waste disposal processes;
  7. Life cycle assessment and economic analysis of clean coal technology waste management systems;
  8. Case studies on coordinated development of regional-scale clean coal industries and waste resource utilization.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
