Advances in Bridge Protection and Sustainability Under Extreme Loads
This special issue belongs to the section "Sustainable Engineering and Science".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Civil infrastructures, especially for bridges, may suffer severe damage in some extreme events, such as vehicle-bridge and vessel-bridge collision accidents. Failure of bridge structures can result in huge casualties and economic losses. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to develop some innovative protective technologies to ensure bridge structure sustainability. A significant theme under investigation is the performance evaluation of the bridge protection device. In addition, the design method for improving extreme load resistance is also a promising measure to promote bridge life-cycle maintenance.
This Special Issue is a gathering for innovative ideas on bridge disaster mitigation and sustainable resilience development. It aims to explore the future of intelligent bridge design, sustainable protective materials, advanced maintenance/retrofit strategies and life-cycle protection assessment.
In this context, we are pleased to announce this Special Issue, entitled “Advances in Bridge Protection and Sustainability Under Extreme Loads”. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
(1) Innovative bridge protection technology;
(2) Extreme load risk evaluation theory;
(3) Sustainable protective design;
(4) High-performance and sustainable protective materials;
(5) Advanced maintenance/retrofit method;
(6) Life-cycle and high-efficient protection assessment;
(7) Artificial intelligence application in protection engineering.
We invite researchers and experts to submit original research and review articles that describe the state of the art and further stimulate innovations in the relevant fields.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
