Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent years have seen the advent of next-generation communication systems such as the 5G/6G reality real-time Internet of Things (IoT) concept. Consequently, a series of smart applications are forming based on the integration of IoT technology, smart sensors, and different computing schemes in order to create smart cities and enhance humanity’s quality of life. However, these applications face several challenges, such as the service response time, the quality of service (QoS), energy consumption, privacy, and security. In order to address these problems, recent studies have proposed implementing artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge of networks and forming intelligent systems. This helps to minimize the service response time, save energy and computing costs, and enhance the overall performance of sustainable smart cities. However, there remain several problems when integrating AI into the edge of the network. Traditional AI techniques are deployed on powerful servers with centralized training data, while Edge devices are resource-constrained.

Therefore, this Special Issue (SI) is dedicated to IoT-based smart applications and/or advanced computing technologies such as Cloud/Fog/Edge, 6G and next-generation networks, big data analysis, and modern artificial intelligence techniques. The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) Techniques;
  • Emerging Communication Technologies for 6G;
  • Internet of Vehicles/Intelligent Transportation Systems;
  • Edge/Fog/Cloud Computing Schemes;
  • Ad Hoc Communication Technologies;
  • Big Data Analytic Techniques;
  • Inter of Things Applications;
  • Security and Privacy of Advanced Networks;
  • Smart applications in emerging areas such as Smart Healthcare, Smart Grids, Smart Agriculture, and Smart Homes/Cities enhance the quality of life for humanity.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
