Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue, ‘Advanced Engineering in Marine Renewable Energy and Sustainability’. Marine renewable energy plays a pivotal role in the global transition toward net-zero emissions and sustainable development. Its importance is particularly evident in densely developed coastal regions and island communities where energy supply and local resources are closely tied to the marine environment. As nations accelerate their low-carbon transitions, various marine renewable energy technologies, including wave, tidal, current, ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC), and salinity gradient power, have demonstrated stable, clean, and locally adaptable power-generation potential. Moreover, marine renewable energy systems offer promising pathways for cross-disciplinary integration and multifunctional development. These innovative approaches are expected to become an important driver of sustainable ocean utilization as related technologies continue to advance.
This Special Issue aims to promote scientific research, technological innovation, and engineering applications in the field of marine renewable energy, with particular focus on device hydrodynamics, performance optimization, environmental impact assessment, coastal resilience enhancement, sustainability analysis, and interdisciplinary integration strategies. We welcome submissions related to device design, numerical modeling, experimental validation, techno-economic analysis, and long-term performance evaluation. The scope of this Special Issue aligns closely with the aims of Sustainability, emphasizing the role of marine renewable energy in sustainable utilization, environmental stewardship, and energy transition.
Original research articles, review papers, and case studies are all welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Numerical modeling, experimental measurement, and validation techniques for marine energy systems;
- Design, analysis, and interdisciplinary applications integrating marine energy devices with coastal/harbor engineering structures;
- Environmental impact, coastal ecological response, and sustainability assessment of marine renewable energy;
- Energy efficiency analysis, techno-economic evaluation, life-cycle assessment (LCA), and policy studies;
- Data-driven models, intelligent monitoring, and artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) innovations for marine energy applications;
- Roles and strategies of marine energy systems in coastal resilience, hazard mitigation, and sustainable port operations;
- Synergistic system design and integration of marine energy with other renewable energy technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
