Nanostructured Surfaces and Interfaces for Environmental and Energy Applications
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Recent advances in nanoscience and materials science have demonstrated that surface and interfacial properties play a critical role in determining the physicochemical, optical, electrical, catalytic, and electrochemical performance of functional materials. The rational approach of nanoscale surfaces and interfaces provides opportunities to control charge transfer, adsorption, surface reactions, defect chemistry, wettability, mass transport, and interfacial interactions, thereby enabling the development of high-performance materials for environmental remediation, sustainable energy conversion, sensing, corrosion protection, and related applications.
This Special Issue, entitled “Nanostructured Surfaces and Interfaces for Environmental and Energy Applications”, aims to provide a platform for recent advances in the synthesis, modification, characterization, and application of nanostructured surfaces and interfaces. Particular attention will be given to understanding surface/interface-dependent mechanisms and establishing relationships between material structure, interfacial properties, and functional performance.
Original research articles, review articles, and short communications addressing experimental, theoretical, and computational aspects of nanostructured surfaces and interfaces are welcome.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Nanostructured surfaces and interface engineering;
- Surface modification, functionalization, and defect engineering;
- Heterojunctions and interfacial charge-transfer mechanisms;
- Photocatalytic and electrocatalytic surfaces;
- Surface engineering for water treatment and environmental remediation;
- Nanostructured interfaces for hydrogen production and CO2 conversion;
- Functional surfaces for energy conversion and storage;
- Nanostructured membranes, sensing, and separation technologies;
- Advanced characterization and computational modeling of surfaces and interfaces.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Surfaces is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
