Methods, Measurements, and Sensor Technology for Lighting Applications

Dear Colleagues,

Lighting technologies are currently undergoing a profound transformation driven by advances in solid-state lighting, spectral control, intelligent electronics, and high-performance sensor systems. Modern lighting is no longer limited to providing adequate visual conditions; it encompasses human-centric and integrative lighting, spectral tuning for specialized applications, real-time monitoring, and data-driven optimization supported by advanced electronics and sensing architectures.

This Special Issue aims to gather original research and review contributions addressing methods, measurement techniques, sensor systems, and control strategies for state-of-the-art lighting applications. We especially welcome works that bridge electronic engineering, spectral science, and sensor technology, including those focused on melanopic metrics, integrative lighting, and spectral evaluation for relevant standards such as ISO/CIE 8995 or WELL, as well as innovations in power electronics for spectrally tunable light sources.

This Special Issue welcomes submissions including, but not limited to, the following areas:

• Methods and measurement techniques in LED lighting and LED special applications (spectral characterization, advanced spectral indices evaluation, circadian-related metrics, etc.).
• Applied photometry and luminotechnical modeling (optical ray-tracing methods, thermal modeling, integration of optical, spectral and thermal effects, etc.).
• Sensor systems and calibration techniques (computational reconstruction, compensation techniques for low-cost sensors, data fusion, sensor-assisted lighting systems, etc.).
• Optimization strategies for spectral mixing in integrative lighting and special applications (human-centric control, numerical methods, etc.).
• Electronics and control of multi-channel LED luminaires.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
