Nano-Hybrid Systems for Electrochemical Sensing
This special issue belongs to the section "Nanosensors".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Although nanoparticles have exceptional intrinsic qualities, their practical performance is often limited due to structural and physicochemical challenges; these include agglomeration, which can reduce the effective active surface area and block reactive sites, as well as structural stacking—especially in layered materials such as graphene—which leads to restacking and dense packing, significantly decreasing porosity and restricting electrolyte penetration. As a result, the efficiency of mass transport and ion diffusion is hindered due to limited pore accessibility, ultimately reducing electrochemical or catalytic performance. Moreover, low electrical conductivity slows charge transfer and increases internal resistance. Overall, agglomeration, low conductivity, a small surface area, and limited porosity can considerably compromise the efficiency of nanoparticles in electrochemical applications.
These challenges can be addressed using nanocomposites. By integrating various emerging materials at the nanoscale, researchers can synthesize nanocomposites that enhance conductivity, structural integrity, and porosity, thus promoting better interactions in electrochemical applications. The emergence of different nanocomposite-based sensors, like electrochemical nanosensors for the detection of toxic substances in water, has attracted considerable interest. This Special Issue not only explores their importance in detecting toxicants, but also summarizes recent progress in the development of novel nanocomposite-based sensors, including carbon-based, metallic, and metal oxide/hydroxide nanocomposites.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
