Reconfigurable and Multifunctional Metasurfaces for Sensing, Imaging, and Integrated Photonic Systems
This special issue belongs to the section "New Applications Enabled by Photonics Technologies and Systems".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Metasurfaces—ultrathin planar structures composed of subwavelength nanostructures—have rapidly emerged as a transformative platform in modern photonics, enabling unprecedented control over the amplitude, phase, and polarization of light within compact, planar architectures. Their compatibility with standard nanofabrication processes and remarkable design versatility have driven breakthroughs across diverse fields, from imaging and display technologies to telecommunications and biomedical diagnostics. As the demand grows for miniaturized, multifunctional optical components, metasurfaces are poised to bridge the gap between fundamental photonic research and real-world applications.
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue, entitled "Advances in Metasurfaces".
This Special Issue aims to present a comprehensive collection of the latest developments in metasurface science and technology, spanning novel design strategies, emerging material platforms, and application-driven innovations. By bringing together contributions from researchers across disciplines, it seeks to capture the breadth and depth of metasurface research and its growing impact on photonics.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but need not be limited to) the following:
- Novel metasurface design and inverse design methodologies;
- Metalens design, fabrication, and system integration;
- Polarization imaging and polarimetric sensing;
- Metasurfaces for augmented reality (AR) and holographic displays;
- Millimeter-wave and terahertz metasurfaces for 6G telecommunications;
- Metasurface-enabled biomedical and clinical imaging;
- Beam steering using metasurface optics;
- Tunable, reconfigurable, and programmable metasurfaces;
- Machine-learning-assisted metasurface optimization;
- Multifunctional and multiplexed metasurface platforms.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
